Embodied Energy: "Comprises the energy consumed during the extraction and processing of raw materials, transportation of the original raw materials, manufacturing of building materials and components and energy use for various processes during the construction and demolition of the building."

The embodied energy of a product is typically measured in MJ/kg (megajoules of energy needed to make a kilogram of product). This system of measurement allows potential consumers to evaluate the "environmental impact" of a product before use.

The embodied energy of an ICP system (including concrete block, sand, and aggregate) is less than asphalt paving:

ICP system: 1.4 MJ/kg (Concrete pavers 1.2 MJ/kg + Sand 0.1 MJ/kg + Aggregate 0.1 MJ/kg)
Asphalt Paving: 3.4 MJ/kg
